Medeco Locksmith in Houston, NY | Novak Lock & Security

We provide Houston Lock Installation & Rekey service for Medeco hardware across the city, from Biaxial cylinders on 1970s storefronts to M3 deadbolts in post-2000 master-planned communities. What makes our Medeco work different here is simple: we carry genuine Medeco Biaxial, M3, and 32 Series parts in the same truck because Houston has no zoning laws, so a single route can run from a 1920s bungalow in The Heights to a commercial building across the street. Call (331) 310-8471 and you’ll get a firm written quote before anyone is dispatched. Novak Lock & Security has been servicing Medeco hardware in Houston’s corrosive, flood-prone climate since 2002. Most Medeco service calls in Houston are completed same day.

Why Houston Residents Choose Us for Medeco Service

Daniel Novak grew up in Astoria, two blocks from the elevated N train, and learned the trade doing commercial rekeys across New York’s five boroughs before building Novak Lock & Security into a shop that handles the full Medeco product line. That background matters in Houston, where a Medeco lock on a Meyerland ranch built in 1968 fails differently than one on a Katy home built in 2018. We know both failure patterns because we see both on the same dispatch route.

Our techs work on Medeco sales & service with genuine factory pins, cylinders, and tailpieces whenever the job calls for them. Aftermarket clones cannot hold the exact biaxial angles and torque-throw ratios Medeco drives demand, so we do not install them. We are an independent Medeco service provider. We are not manufacturer-affiliated or authorized, and we tell you that plainly because the distinction matters when you are deciding who should touch a high-security cylinder.

Common Medeco Locksmith Problems We Solve in Houston

Common Medeco Locksmith Problems We Solve in Houston
  • Silt-packed Biaxial cylinders after floods. After Harvey, Allison, and the Tax Day floods, we regularly pull Medeco Biaxial plugs from doors in Meyerland and Kingwood that are packed with dried bayou sediment. The pins sit in a gray silt paste, the key bends before it turns, and the homeowner assumes the whole lock is shot. Often it is not. Ultrasonic cleaning and a new factory sidebar brings the cylinder back.
  • Sticky key syndrome in M3 cylinders. Houston’s humidity often runs above 75%, and the salt-laden air near the Ship Channel accelerates oxidation inside Medeco M3 cylinders. The result is intermittent sticking when the key inserts or turns, even on a lock that shows no external rust. We disassemble, inspect the spool pins, and replace the oxidized components with genuine Medeco parts.
  • Deadbolt binding from slab foundation expansion. Summer days above 98°F cause aluminum and steel door frames on Houston’s slab-foundation homes to expand enough that Medeco deadbolts bind in the strike. The deadbolt tongue bows under torque, wearing the internal tailpiece. Left unaddressed, the tailpiece eventually snaps. This presents as a lock failure but it is really a frame-expansion issue, and fixing it requires adjusting the strike, not just lubricating the bolt.
  • Rekeyed tenant turnover locks with worn keyways. Houston’s rental-heavy suburbs see Medeco deadbolts rekeyed repeatedly as tenants cycle through. Each rekey, done wrong by someone using aftermarket pins, accelerates keyway wear. Wallowed keyways eventually compromise the lock’s pick resistance. We rekey with Medeco factory pins only and we tell you when the cylinder body itself is too far gone to save.
  • Bent Medeco keys from pocket carry. Medeco’s patented angle cuts mean even slight bending throws the key off. Houston heat softens nickel-silver key blanks just enough that a key carried in a back pocket can develop a micro-curve invisible to the eye, and suddenly it will not insert past the fourth pin. We cut replacement Medeco keys from factory blanks, on the card for KeyMark systems.

Medeco Service in Houston: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment

Houston is the only major city of its size in the United States with no zoning law, and that fact shapes how Medeco locksmith work gets done here more than any other single condition. A Medeco-equipped commercial property can sit directly across the street from a 1920s craftsman bungalow with original Schlage hardware and swollen wooden jambs. So our techs stock Medeco Biaxial, M3, and 32 Series parts together in one truck for a single route through The Heights. They diagnose lock failures against wildly different door ages, jamb materials, and frame tolerances on the same block. That is not a situation a Medeco tech faces in Dallas or Austin. In Houston, it is every working day, and it is the reason our service approach here is built around carrying genuine Medeco parts, not “universal” substitutes. On a recent service call to a post-flood rebuild in Meyerland, our tech found a Medeco Biaxial deadbolt that had survived Harvey but was packed with dried bayou sediment. When the plug was pulled, the pins were caked in gray silt paste. We ultrasonically cleaned the cylinder, installed a new factory sidebar, and restored the deadbolt to a like-new turn. The homeowner had assumed full replacement was the only option. Usually, it is not.

Medeco Models & Products We Service in Houston

Medeco Models & Products We Service in Houston

We work on the full Medeco line that shows up on Houston doors. Medeco M3 cylinders with key control and cut-resistant inserts are common in commercial and high-end residential settings. Medeco Biaxial, the original angled-cut design, still lives on older commercial doors and gates throughout Houston proper. The 32 Series heavy-duty mortise and rim cylinders appear on storefronts and industrial entries. Medeco KeyMark systems, with card-controlled key duplication, are a standard in GHA and HOA common areas across the suburbs.

Our parts policy is specific: genuine Medeco factory components whenever the manufacturer makes them available. If a cylinder body is scored or a keyway is wallowed from years of abuse, we recommend full replacement with a genuine Medeco unit. We will not install a knockoff, period. When we repair rather than replace, it is because the plug, pins, and sidebar are structurally sound and the issue is sediment, oxidation, or a worn tailpiece.

Medeco Service Pricing in Houston

Most Medeco service calls in Houston fall into clear ranges, and the dispatcher quotes you a firm price before anyone starts driving. A standard Medeco rekey typically runs $35-$65 per cylinder depending on the model and keyway. Full Medeco M3 cylinder replacement runs $140-$230 per cylinder, parts included. Biaxial cylinder service, whether it is a cleaning and new sidebar or a full replacement, falls between those two depending on what is inside the plug. KeyMark key duplication runs $18-$38 per key, card verification required. Daniel Novak built this company on a rule that has not changed since 2002: the price quoted on the phone is the exact price on the invoice. Never a call-out surcharge added at the door. Want an exact number for your job? Call (331) 310-8471 and tell us what is on your door. Estimates are free and they are written.

FAQs - Medeco Locksmith in Houston

Why does my Medeco key turn hard only in the summer?
This is usually Houston slab foundation expansion at work. When summer heat pushes above 98°F, aluminum and steel door frames across the city expand enough to shift the strike plate a few millimeters, binding the deadbolt. It is a frame issue presenting as a lock issue. We re-align the strike and adjust the deadbolt throw rather than replacing a cylinder that is still perfectly good. If you’re in Katy or Pearland on a slab home, this is even more common. Call (331) 310-8471 and describe what you are seeing; we will tell you if it sounds like frame bind or something else.

Can you rekey a Medeco M3 cylinder after a tenant leaves without changing the whole lock?
Yes. Rekeying is standard after tenant turnover in Houston rental stock, and it costs far less than swapping cylinders. We replace only the pins inside the existing M3 cylinder with genuine Medeco factory pins, then cut new keys. The old keys stop working immediately. The only time we recommend replacing the M3 rather than rekeying is when the keyway itself is worn from repeated poor-quality rekeys, at which point the lock’s resistance is compromised. We will tell you plainly if that is what we find.

My Medeco lock looks fine outside but seizes after heavy rain - what is happening?
Houston’s humidity spikes sharply after rain events, and with relative humidity already above 75% most of the year, moisture penetrates the cylinder and accelerates oxidation on the pins and springs inside. The lock seizes even though the exterior shows no rust. We open it up, assess how much oxidation has set in, and either clean and re-lubricate or replace the affected components with genuine Medeco parts. The repair is priced in writing before we start.

Is it true Medeco keys cannot be duplicated at hardware stores?
Yes, with a caveat. Standard Medeco keys carry angled cuts that most hardware-store machines cannot reproduce accurately, and Medeco restricts key blank distribution through a controlled network of dealers. KeyMark systems go further: the key is tied to a registration card, and no duplication happens without that card. We cut Medeco keys from factory blanks and verify KeyMark card ownership before cutting anything.

After my house flooded, do I need to replace my Medeco deadbolt or just rekey it?
It depends on what got inside the cylinder, and this is a question we have answered hundreds of times in Houston’s repeatedly flooded ZIP codes like 77096 and 77339. If the deadbolt was above the water line, a rekey and a look at the internals is often all it needs. If the cylinder took on bayou water, fine silt works its way into the plug and the pins seize under heavy torque. Sometimes ultrasonic cleaning and new pins solve it. Sometimes the cylinder body is scored and full replacement is the honest recommendation. Call (331) 310-8471 and we will tell you what to expect from a free written estimate before anyone touches the door.
