How Novak Lock & Security Was Born
In 2002, Daniel Novak was working as a locksmith for a company he didn’t believe in. The pattern bothered him daily: a dispatcher would quote one price over the phone, then the technician would arrive and find reasons to charge more. Drilling a lock that could have been picked. Replacing hardware that only needed adjustment. The customer, standing on their own doorstep with no way to verify any of it, paid whatever number appeared on the invoice. Daniel watched a homeowner in Queens hand over nearly triple the quoted price for a simple lockout, and something shifted. He knew the trade could be better than this. He knew the tools, the techniques, and the honest math of what a job should cost. So he started Novak Lock & Security with one rule that is still the backbone of everything we do: the dispatcher quotes a firm price on the phone, and the technician is not permitted to change it on the doorstep. That single rule was the whole business then. It remains the whole business now, across every location that carries the Novak name.
Daniel Novak’s Personal Connection to the Locksmith Trade
Daniel came into locksmithing the way a lot of people come into a trade they end up loving: sideways, and a little by accident. He was working maintenance on apartment buildings in Brooklyn, and part of the job was dealing with locks that failed, cylinders that jammed, tenants locked out at bad hours. He got tired of waiting on outside contractors who showed up late and charged whatever they felt like. So he bought a pinning kit and a practice cylinder and started taking apart every lock he could get his hands on. The first time he rekeyed a lock himself, he remembers the smell of the brass shavings and the click of the pins seating correctly, and something about the precision of it stuck with him. This was work you could verify. A lock either turned smoothly or it didn’t. The key either worked or it didn’t. There was no ambiguity, no way to fake competence. He spent his evenings in a workroom with a jeweler’s screwdriver and a growing collection of cylinders, learning the difference between a Kwikset and a Schlage by feel. What started as frustration with bad contractors became a genuine fascination with the mechanical logic of locking systems. More than two decades later, that’s still what gets him out of bed: the knowledge that this work is checkable. Every job leaves evidence. Every key either turns or it doesn’t. And a customer deserves to see exactly what was done, what was found, and what it cost. If he weren’t doing this, Daniel says he’d probably be restoring old motorcycles, because the appeal is the same: mechanical systems where every part has a job, and you can hold the proof in your hand.
Meet Daniel Novak - The Person Behind Every Job

Daniel Novak is the Owner & Founder of Novak Lock & Security. He built his career on the principle that a locksmith’s work should be documented, verifiable, and priced before it starts. Trained in residential, commercial, and automotive locksmithing, Daniel works with hardware from Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Yale, and he is known among his peers for treating a simple rekey with the same care as a full commercial master-key system. What separates Daniel from a corporate franchise technician is simple: his name is on the van and on the invoice. He designed the documentation system every Novak location uses, and he personally reviews the evidence standards that ensure every customer gets photos and readings of what was actually found. Away from the bench, Daniel is a chess player who approaches lock work the same way he approaches the board: think ahead, respect the opponent’s position, and never rush a move. His commitment to customers is direct and personal: every job under the Novak name gets the same honesty he demanded from the trade back in 2002.
Our Promise to Homeowners
We promise the price you were quoted is the price on the invoice. That’s not a slogan; it’s the operating rule Daniel wrote into the company from day one, and it became the foundation for what we now call The Haven Standard. Clause 1 is Have it in writing: a flat price, a written scope, and a written warranty before anyone starts. Every promise we make is tied to something you can hold onto. If we say we’ll arrive in a real window, you get a named tech and a text when they’re on the way. If we find something unexpected, we show you the evidence before we touch anything else. And if a job goes wrong, our warranty is in writing, not in a phone conversation someone might misremember. That’s how trust actually works in this trade: documentation, not charm.
Our Credentials

- State-licensed: every pro working under our name is required to hold the license their state requires
- Insured & bonded: every location carries the coverage homeowners should demand before anyone touches their locks
- Background-checked crews: verified as part of the Haven Standard, with license numbers on the page
- Two-plus decades of institutional experience: founded in 2002, with documented standards built over years of real jobs
- Strong local reputation: built through written estimates, documented work records, and prices that match the quote
Why these credentials matter to a homeowner: someone working on your locks has full access to your security. A license means they’ve met state requirements. Insurance means you’re protected if something goes wrong. And a documented work record means you can verify exactly what was done, what was found, and what it cost. These are not nice-to-haves in this trade. They’re the baseline a professional should never fall below.
Rooted in the Communities We Serve
Novak Lock & Security is a national network, and we don’t pretend to be from anywhere we’re not. The local teams in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, and every market we serve are the ones with the licenses, the trucks, and the neighbors. They’re independently owned and operated, rooted in their own communities. What Haven contributes is the standard they agree to work to, the documentation system that proves it, and the buying power that keeps their prices honest. The result is a consistent experience, whether you’re calling from Brooklyn or San Antonio.
