Medeco Commercial Locksmith in New York City: What to Know First

We provide independent Medeco commercial locksmith service across New York City, typically same-day for lockouts and 24 to 48 hours for scheduled cylinder work or master key system repairs. The honest price posture is simple: you get a written quote before we dispatch anyone, and that price does not change when the technician arrives. That has been our rule since 2002, and it applies to every Medeco job we take.

Call (331) 310-8471

This page is for building owners, office managers, and facility staff who already have Medeco hardware installed and need someone who actually knows the product line. If you have a Medeco cylinder that is binding, a key that snapped in a high-security mortise lock, or a master key system that stopped working after a tenant change, call (331) 310-8471. Daniel Novak has been working New York City doors and cylinders for nearly two decades, and we will tell you over the phone what we think is wrong and what it will cost to fix.

How Medeco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • Medeco M3 and Biaxial cylinders seizing in cold weather. New York City winters expose a real weak point in Medeco’s sidebar mechanism. The sidebar pins are machined to tight tolerances, and when temperatures drop below freezing, old lubricant inside the cylinder thickens. The key inserts but will not turn, or turns only with force. We see this most in Manhattan buildings with exposed street-level doors. The fix is not WD-40 sprayed through the keyway. We disassemble the cylinder, clean the pin chambers properly, and relubricate with a dry film lubricant that does not attract grime. On M3 cylinders that have been force-turned too many times, we often replace the sidebar and springs rather than the whole cylinder.
  • Broken keys in Medeco X4 and KeyMark cylinders. Medeco keys are solid nickel silver and stronger than most, but the deep cuts on high-security keyways create a stress point right where the shoulder meets the blade. When a key snaps off flush in an X4 cylinder, the angled cuts make extraction harder than a standard keyway. We use key extraction tools sized for Medeco’s restricted keyway geometry, not generic spiral extractors that can score the plug. After extraction, we test the remaining keyway for damage and cut a replacement key only after confirming the cylinder still operates cleanly.
  • Master key system drift on Medeco M3 and Medeco XT systems. This is the most common call we get from commercial buildings in Queens and Brooklyn. A building runs a master key system, someone adds a new lock, and suddenly a master key works on one door but not another. Medeco master key systems are built on strict pinning charts, and when a cylinder is pinned by someone who does not have the original chart, the math breaks. We rebuild the cylinder to the original system specs, verify it against the building’s existing keys, and document the new pinning record so the system does not drift again.
  • Frozen Medeco interchangeable cores (SFIC and LFIC format). Medeco cores in small format interchangeable core housing are common in New York City office suites and co-op buildings. The control key operates but the core will not release from the housing, or the core turns but the lock will not throw. The usual cause is a worn control sleeve or a bent retaining pin inside the housing, not the Medeco core itself. We see this a lot in older Midtown office buildings where the housings are original to the building. We replace the worn housing components and keep the Medeco core if it is in good condition, which saves you the cost of re-coring an entire floor.
  • Medeco M3 key blank restrictions causing lockout delays. If you lose a Medeco key, you cannot walk into a hardware store and get a copy. The keyway is restricted and blanks are only available through authorized channels. For New York City businesses, that means a lost key can shut down operations fast. We carry a range of Medeco M3, Biaxial, X4, and KeyMark blanks on our service vehicles, and we can originate a new key on site if you have the key code card that came with your system. If you do not have the code card, we can still cut a working key by impressioning or decoding the existing cylinder, but it takes longer and costs more.

Our Medeco Commercial Locksmith Process

Our Medeco Commercial Locksmith Process
  1. 1
Call and diagnosis. You call (331) 310-8471 and describe the problem in your own words. We ask about the lock type, the Medeco keyway (if you know it), and what the door is doing. We give you a firm price on the phone. Haven Standard Clause 1: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice.
  2. 2
Dispatch and arrival. A background-checked, uniformed technician arrives with Medeco-specific tools, pin kits, and blanks. We do not send a generalist who will Google your lock model on the way over.
  3. 3
On-site inspection. We open the lock, inspect the cylinder, strike plate, and door prep. We tell you what we found, in plain language, and we show you the worn or broken part before we replace anything.
  4. 4
Repair or replacement with honest parts decisions. If the cylinder is rebuildable, we rebuild it with Medeco OEM pins and springs. If the cylinder is beyond saving, we quote a replacement cylinder price before we order or install. We do not push aftermarket Medeco clones unless the customer is on a tight budget and we say so plainly, because aftermarket sidebar pins do not meet Medeco’s tolerance specs.
  5. 5
Testing and verification. We cycle the lock at least ten times, test every key in the system against the repaired cylinder, and verify the master key still operates correctly on that door.
  6. 6
Documentation. You get a written record of what was done, the parts used, and the price. We also leave a documented photo record of the finished work. Every Medeco job we do ends with paperwork you can keep.

What Medeco Commercial Locksmith Costs in New York City

Here is what you can expect to pay for common Medeco work in New York City. These are real ranges, not teaser rates.

  • Medeco lockout service: $95 to $185, depending on time of day and whether the lock is a standard mortise cylinder or a high-security rim cylinder.
  • Medeco cylinder rebuild (Biaxial or M3): $65 to $140 per cylinder, including new OEM pins, springs, and sidebar if needed.
  • Medeco key duplication with existing code card: $12 to $35 per key, depending on the keyway and blank type.
  • Medeco key origination without code card: $45 to $120 per key, because impressioning or decoding takes significantly more labor.
  • Master key system re-key or repair: $25 to $45 per cylinder, plus a $75 to $150 system mapping fee if we need to rebuild the pinning chart.
  • Full Medeco mortise lock replacement: $250 to $600 installed, depending on door prep and finish.

What moves the price: time of day, cylinder count, whether you have the key code card, and whether the hardware is standard or restricted keyway. We quote the full price on the phone, and that price is the price. Call (331) 310-8471 for an exact quote. Estimates are free.

Why New York City Homeowners Call Novak Lock & Security for Medeco Work

Why New York City Homeowners Call Novak Lock & Security for Medeco Work

Because we write the price down before we touch the door, and the technician is not allowed to change it. That rule has been in place since 2002, before bait-and-switch locksmith pricing became a known problem in this city, and it is the reason our name is on the van. The name on the van is the same name on the invoice.

We also know Medeco hardware the way a builder knows framing. Daniel Novak, our owner, grew up in Astoria and has been working New York City doors for close to two decades. When we open a Medeco cylinder and find the sidebar pin worn flat, we tell you what that means and what it costs to fix, and we show you the part before we replace it. If your building runs other brands alongside Medeco, our techs carry Schlage and Kwikset inventory too, so a mixed-hardware service call is one trip, not three. Every job is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and every visit ends with a documented photo record. That is not an upgrade. It is the standard.
