Medeco Lock Installation & Rekey in New York City: What to Know First

We install and rekey Medeco locks throughout New York City as an independent Medeco service provider, with most residential jobs completed in a single visit. Rekeying a Medeco cylinder typically runs $35-$65 per lock when the existing hardware is sound, and full installation of a new Medeco deadbolt runs $185-$340 including the lock, labor, and written documentation. Every price is quoted in writing on the phone before a technician is dispatched, and per Haven Standard Clause 1, that’s the price on the invoice.

This page is written for homeowners who already own Medeco hardware or are considering it for their New York City property. It covers how these locks fail, what we do about it, and what you should expect to pay. It does not pretend Medeco locks never need service. They do, and we’ve fixed nearly every model line Medeco has produced in the last two decades. If you have a Medeco lock that’s binding, won’t turn, or needs a key change, call (331) 310-8471 and you’ll get a live person who can give you a firm number.

How Medeco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

Medeco builds genuinely high-security cylinders. That’s not marketing. But the same tight tolerances that make them resistant to picking and bumping also make them less forgiving of wear, misalignment, and poor installation than a standard Kwikset or Schlage. Here’s what we actually find on New York City doors, model line by model line.

  • Medeco Maxum deadbolts with a stiff or frozen thumbturn. This is the most common call we get on Medeco hardware in New York City, and it’s rarely the cylinder. The Maxum’s thumbturn actuator rides on a steel spindle that picks up corrosion when the door faces an unconditioned hallway or the lock sits in a vestibule that swings between hot and cold. We pull the thumbturn assembly, clean the spindle and the actuator channel, and lubricate with a dry graphite film. If the spindle is worn oval, we replace it. Full cylinder replacement is rarely needed.
  • Medeco Biaxial and M3 cylinders that won’t accept the key smoothly. Medeco keys are shoulder-stopped, not tip-stopped like most residential keys. When a knob or lever gets bumped hard enough to shift the cylinder body slightly forward in the bore, the key stops short of full insertion and the pins don’t align. The owner assumes the lock is failing. What’s actually happening is the cylinder needs to be re-seated and the set screw retorqued. We do that on site, re-time the key, and the lock returns to factory feel.
  • Corroded tailpieces on Medeco deadbolts installed on metal doors. This is a New York City specific issue. Prewar and mid-century buildings around the five boroughs have steel door frames and steel door slabs. Galvanic corrosion between the brass cylinder and the steel tailpiece creates a powdery oxide that seizes the tailpiece. The key turns but the bolt doesn’t throw. The fix is a replacement tailpiece, and on Medeco we use only the OEM part because aftermarket tailpieces are machined slightly undersized and strip within a year.
  • Worn sidebar springs on M3 cylinders with heavy key rings. The M3’s sidebar mechanism is what makes it pick and bump resistant, but the sidebar springs are small coil springs that fatigue if the key gets yanked on a ring loaded with a dozen other keys. Symptom: the key enters fine but feels “dead” on the second turn, or the cylinder needs a jiggle to release. We replace the spring set and re-lubricate. If you catch it early, you keep the cylinder. If it’s been forced for months, the sidebar itself may have rounded edges and the cylinder gets replaced.
  • Mismatched keyways after a previous locksmith’s patch job. We routinely find Medeco cylinders that were rekeyed with pins from a different Medeco keyway, or worse, pinned by someone who didn’t have the correct Medeco pin kit and used generic pins. The lock works for a few weeks, then the sidebar starts hanging up because the pins aren’t seating to Medeco depth. We strip the cylinder, verify the keyway, re-pin with factory-spec Medeco pins, and test with a new key before we reinstall. If the cylinder was compromised, we say so and quote a replacement before we do anything.

Our Medeco Lock Installation & Rekey Process

Our Medeco Lock Installation & Rekey Process

Every Medeco job follows the same sequence whether it’s a single deadbolt in Astoria or a multi-cylinder commercial retrofit in Midtown. The point is that you see what’s happening at each step and you have documentation when we leave.

  1. 1
Phone quote. You describe the lock and what it’s doing. Our dispatcher gives you a written price for the service call, labor, and likely parts. That price is firm. Haven Standard Clause 1 applies to every job, no exceptions.
  2. 2
On-site inspection. The technician arrives, confirms the lock type and condition, and checks that what was described matches what’s on the door. If something is materially different, we re-quote in writing before touching a screw. If it matches, we proceed at the original number.
  3. 3
Parts decision. For Medeco work, we use OEM Medeco pins, springs, and tailpieces wherever the cylinder itself is being serviced. For surrounding hardware like strike plates and faceplates, we’ll use the appropriate grade aftermarket part when it meets the same spec. We’ll tell you which is which and why.
  4. 4
The work. Installation or rekey proceeds. For rekeys, the cylinder comes out, gets stripped, cleaned, re-pinned to the new key, and reinstalled. For new installation, we bore, reinforce, and set the lock per the door material, and any misalignment between the bolt and strike gets corrected before we call it done.
  5. 5
Test and documentation. Every key is cycled multiple times, the bolt throw is checked in the locked and unlocked positions, and the lock is operated from both sides. We photograph the finished work and the condition of the door, and those photos are left with you along with the written service record.
  6. 6
365-Day Done Right Promise. If the lock doesn’t perform correctly within a year, we return and make it right. That’s not a cheerful slogan. It’s the operating rule.

What Medeco Lock Installation & Rekey Costs in New York City

Medeco work costs more than standard residential lock work because the cylinders, pins, and replacement parts cost more, and because fewer shops in New York City stock the factory pin kits and key blanks. Here are the ranges we quote for the most common Medeco scenarios:

Service Typical Price Range
Rekey single Medeco cylinder (existing hardware in good condition) $35-$65
Rekey multiple Medeco cylinders to one key (per additional cylinder) $25-$45
New Medeco deadbolt installation (lock included) $185-$340
New Medeco knob or lever installation (lock included) $165-$290
Service call / diagnostic (applied toward repair if you proceed) $45-$75
Tailpiece or sidebar spring replacement (parts and labor) $40-$95

What moves the price: door prep on a metal door versus wood, whether the strike needs repositioning, and whether the existing bore was cut cleanly or looks like it was chewed open with a dull hole saw. We’ll quote the whole job before we start. No call-out surcharge added at the door. If you bring us a competitor’s written estimate for Medeco work, we’ll review it at no charge and tell you if the spec matches the price.

Why New York City Homeowners Call Novak Lock & Security for Medeco Work

Why New York City Homeowners Call Novak Lock & Security for Medeco Work

Medeco isn’t a brand we picked up last year to fill out a service list. Daniel Novak has been pulling these cylinders apart since he was a kid watching his father run a hardware store on Steinway Street, and we’ve been servicing them professionally across New York City since 2002. We know what a Biaxial cylinder sounds like when the sidebar spring is going, and we know when a Maxum just needs a tailpiece replacement rather than a new lock. We’ll tell you which one your door needs, and quote it in writing.

Every technician who walks through your door is background-checked and uniformed, and every visit ends with a documented photo record, whether it’s a ten-minute rekey or a full installation. We also service the rest of the spectrum, Schlage and Kwikset included, so if you have Medeco on the front door and a standard deadbolt on the back, one visit covers both. The name on the van is the same name on the invoice. At Novak Lock & Security, that’s been the rule since day one.

FAQs

Does rekeying a Medeco lock void the warranty? Rekeying a Medeco lock does not void the manufacturer’s warranty when the work is done with factory-spec Medeco pins and the cylinder is reassembled to spec. A sloppy rekey with generic pins can void it, which is one reason we use only OEM Medeco pin kit components on these cylinders.

Can you match a new Medeco lock to my existing Medeco key? Yes, if you have a Medeco key card or the original key, we can pin new Medeco cylinders to match it, provided the new hardware uses the same keyway. If you don’t have a key card, we can decode the existing key on site and cut the match. Call (331) 310-8471 and we’ll confirm your keyway before you buy any hardware.

How fast can you get to a Medeco job in New York City? For lockouts, we respond around the clock with a live dispatcher, and most calls get a technician on site within the hour depending on where you are in the five boroughs. For scheduled rekeys and installations, we book same-day or next-day in most cases. You’ll get a firm price and a service window on the phone.

Should I repair or replace my Medeco lock? It depends on the failure. Corroded tailpieces, worn sidebar springs, and misaligned cylinders are repairable, and we’ll always quote the repair first if the hardware is structurally sound. If the cylinder body is cracked, the keyway is wallowed out, or a previous shop rebuilt it with the wrong parts, replacement is the honest answer. We’ll show you the condition in the documentation before we leave.

Do you install Medeco smart or electronic locks? We install Medeco’s electronic and keypad products as well as their mechanical cylinders. The electronics on Medeco’s keypad models are reliable, but the mechanical override cylinder still needs proper pinning and maintenance, which is where most non-specialist installs go wrong. We do the full job: electronics and the cylinder behind them.
