Medeco Smart Lock Installation: The New York City Owner’s Guide
Medeco smart lock installation in New York City typically runs $220-$410 for the full job, including the mounting hardware, alignment, calibration, and the lock itself if it needs replacing. We keep common Medeco cylinders, tailpieces, and mounting plates on the truck, so most of these jobs are done same day, often within two hours of arrival. The way owners usually find us: the keypad works, the deadbolt throws, but the lock won’t pair with the app anymore, or the motor grinds and the bolt only travels halfway. That’s almost always a failed clutch module or a worn tailpiece, not a dead battery, and it is a Medeco-specific fix, not a generic lock repair.
Which Medeco Models This Applies To
Medeco has run several smart lock lines over the years, and the parts do not swap between them. The older Medeco Logic series uses a mortise-style chassis with a motorized bolt; the newer Medeco XT and CLIQ lines are electronic access control cylinders that fit into existing mechanical locks. The part you need depends on which generation you own, and that’s where most New York City owners get stuck. Logic deadbolts fail at the clutch: the motor spins but the coupling that connects motor to bolt strips out. XT and CLIQ cylinders fail differently; they usually have a battery contact issue or a worn sidebar spring, and the door will stop reading the key entirely.
To identify what you have: the Logic deadbolt is a full replacement lock with a visible keypad or fob reader on the exterior. XT and CLIQ cylinders look nearly identical to a standard mechanical cylinder from the outside, with a small electronic contact point on the face. If you pull the cylinder and it has a brass sidebar slot machined along the length of the body, it’s a Medeco high-security cylinder and takes OEM Medeco parts only. There is no quality aftermarket equivalent for the sidebar itself. We stock OEM Medeco tailpieces, mounting screws, and electronic modules on the truck. Aftermarket components are fine for trim plates and strike hardware; they are not fine for anything that touches the locking mechanism. Daniel Novak grew up two blocks from the elevated N train in Astoria, and he’ll tell you the same thing he told commercial clients in Midtown: a Medeco lock with a knockoff internal part is no longer a Medeco lock.
Signs Your Medeco Smart Lock Installation Is Failing

- The keypad accepts the code but the bolt doesn’t move. That’s the clutch module. The motor is running; the coupling between motor and bolt has stripped. On Logic models this is a known wear point, usually after five to seven years of daily use.
- The lock works manually with the thumbturn but not electronically. The motor itself is failing, or the gear train is binding. In New York City’s humidity cycle, we see corrosion build up on the gear teeth, especially on doors that face south and get full sun. The housing sweats, the gears pit, and the motor stalls.
- The app says the lock is locked when it isn’t, or vice versa. That’s the position sensor. On Medeco smart deadbolts this is a small magnetic reed switch near the bolt travel path. When it drifts out of alignment, the lock loses track of its own state.
- The electronic key works intermittently, then not at all. On XT and CLIQ cylinders, this is usually a worn battery contact or a damaged sidebar pin. The sidebar is the Medeco-specific anti-pick mechanism; when a pin binds, the electronic key won’t authenticate against the cylinder.
- The deadbolt throws halfway and stops. That’s an alignment issue in the strike plate, or the tailpiece is bent. A half-engaged deadbolt is a false security; you can shim a door with the bolt only partially extended. We see this a lot in pre-war buildings where the door has settled and nobody ever re-aligned the strike.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed pricing for Medeco smart lock work in New York City breaks down like this:
- Full Medeco smart lock replacement (lock + install): $340-$410
- Clutch or motor module replacement (labor only, if part is stock): $180-$260
- Cylinder replacement for XT or CLIQ (cylinder + install): $220-$310
- Strike plate re-alignment and hardware tune-up: $90-$140
What drives the range is the age of the lock and whether we can harvest usable parts from the existing unit. A Logic deadbolt from 2016 that needs a new clutch module is often better served by a full replacement, because the motor is usually not far behind. We’ll tell you that plainly, with the old part on the table in front of you, before you spend a dollar. Every job includes the written price before any work starts, a documented photo record when we leave, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise. Haven Standard Clause 1: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice. There is no call-out surcharge added when the technician arrives.
DIY or Call Us?

Medeco smart locks run on low-voltage battery power, so the electrical risk is minimal. The risk is in the mechanical fitting. High-security cylinders like Medeco’s use precision-machined sidebars and pins with very tight tolerances. If you force a misaligned cylinder into the housing, you’ll score the pin chambers and ruin a $140 part in about thirty seconds. Same thing with the tailpiece: forcing a bolt against a misaligned strike plate bends the tailpiece, and a bent tailpiece is a replacement part, not a fix. What you can safely do: check the battery voltage with a multimeter, confirm the strike plate screws are tight, and note whether the bolt moves smoothly by hand. What you should not do: open the lock body. There are small springs and detent balls inside that are easy to lose and annoying to source. If the keypad works and the bolt doesn’t, that’s a call to (331) 310-8471, not a YouTube tutorial.
FAQs
The electronic modules on Medeco smart locks typically last five to eight years in New York City conditions, with coastal humidity and temperature swings shortening that toward the lower end for south-facing doors. The mechanical cylinder itself, the high-security Medeco core, will outlast the electronics by a decade or more, which is why we often recommend replacing the smart module and keeping the existing cylinder. Call (331) 310-8471 and we’ll tell you, from the model number, whether your lock is a candidate for that.
Yes, in most cases the failure is in a replaceable component: a clutch module, a motor, a battery contact, or a tailpiece, all of which we stock and install as standalone repairs. Full replacement only makes sense when multiple components are worn or the lock is more than eight years old and you want a fresh warranty. The exact price for either path is quoted on the phone before we dispatch anyone.
A standard Medeco smart lock replacement takes 45 to 90 minutes on site, depending on whether the strike plate needs re-alignment and whether the door has settled. A module or cylinder repair is usually under an hour. We book same-day for most of New York City and we’ll tell you the exact arrival window when you call (331) 310-8471.
We stock common Medeco tailpieces, mounting hardware, strike plates, and electronic modules for the Logic, XT, and CLIQ lines on every truck. For less common cylinder lengths and finishes, we order OEM from the factory distributor and schedule the install for the day the part arrives. When you call, we’ll identify the part number you need and tell you, in writing, whether it’s on the truck or on order.
We’re independent of Medeco, but we’ve been installing and servicing their cylinders and smart locks across New York City for two decades. We also work with Schlage and Kwikset, but when a customer hands us a Medeco, we treat it like what it is: a precision lock, not a commodity. The name on the van is the same name on the invoice. Call (331) 310-8471 for a free estimate on Medeco smart lock installation, parts repair, or a full replacement, anywhere in New York City.
