Mul-T-Lock Smart Lock Installation: The New York City Owner’s Guide
Mul-T-Lock smart lock installation in New York City typically runs $285-$495 for the full job, including the lock, labor, and setup on your phone, and we keep the common Mul-T-Lock ENTR and SMARTair lines stocked on our trucks. Most owners discover their smart lock has failed the same way: the keypad stops responding, the motor whirs but the bolt doesn’t move, or the app says “connected” while the door stays locked. We can usually get a technician to your address in any of the five boroughs the same day, and the price you hear on the phone is the price on the invoice. That’s Haven Standard Clause 1, and it’s been our rule since 2002.
Before you assume the whole lock is dead, know this: about a third of the Mul-T-Lock smart lock failures we see in New York City are not the lock itself. They’re the mounting screws backing out of a door that has shifted with the seasons, or the strike plate misaligned after a few years of the door being pulled hard against a warped frame. Daniel Novak has seen enough of these to check the mechanical alignment first, because a smart lock installed on a door that doesn’t close true will burn through its motor in eighteen months, guaranteed.
Which Mul-T-Lock Models This Applies To
We install and service the full Mul-T-Lock smart lock line, but in New York City the work breaks down into two main families. The ENTR series, which includes the ENTR and ENTR Pro, is the keypad-and-app deadbolt you see on brownstones, co-ops, and single-family homes across Astoria, Park Slope, and Riverdale. The SMARTair line is the access-control platform used in doorman buildings, offices, and multi-unit walk-ups, where you need audit trails and individual user codes rather than a residential keypad. The third line we occasionally see is the older CodeSecure, which is now discontinued but still out there in thousands of New York doors.
The compatibility gotcha that catches owners off guard: Mul-T-Lock smart cylinders use a 13mm tailpiece, not the standard 32mm tailpiece you’ll find on Schlage or Kwikset hardware. If you buy a replacement cylinder or smart module from a generic online seller, you’ll often get the wrong tailpiece length and the lock simply won’t operate the bolt. We stock OEM Mul-T-Lock parts plus the correct aftermarket equivalents for discontinued models like CodeSecure, where factory parts are getting scarce. Novak Lock & Security is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Mul-T-Lock, but we’ve been doing factory-authorized work on their cylinders for the better part of two decades.
Signs Your Mul-T-Lock Smart Lock Installation Is Failing

- The keypad accepts your code but the bolt doesn’t fully retract. This is usually the motor gearing wearing down, not a battery issue. In a New York City winter, when the door swells and the bolt binds against the strike plate, the motor strains harder and fails faster.
- The app shows the lock as “online” but commands time out. The Bluetooth or Wi-Fi module inside the lock has degraded. These modules are replaceable on most ENTR models without changing the whole lock, which saves you a few hundred dollars.
- The keypad works intermittently, especially in cold weather. The touch sensor degrades over time, and the temperature swings in a New York City apartment building, think a hot steam radiator near a cold entry door, accelerate the failure.
- You hear a high-pitched grinding sound during the bolt cycle. That’s the internal gear train stripping. Keep using it and the smart lock will eventually jam mid-throw, leaving you locked out or locked in.
- The physical key turns but the motor doesn’t respond, or vice versa. The clutch mechanism that links the motor to the cylinder has failed. On ENTR models this is a replaceable sub-assembly; on older CodeSecure units it usually means the whole unit is done.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York City, Mul-T-Lock smart lock installation jobs break down like this:
- Full ENTR smart lock replacement (hardware + labor): $385-$495, depending on whether you want the standard keypad or the Pro model with Wi-Fi built in
- Motor or module repair on an existing ENTR: $185-$265, parts and labor included
- New smart lock retrofitted to an existing Mul-T-Lock high-security cylinder: $285-$385, which keeps your current keyway and saves the cost of new keys
- SMARTair component replacement or programming (commercial): quoted per door after a site walk, always in writing
Every quote includes the part, the labor, the programming on your phone or fobs, and a written record of what was installed. You’ll get a documented photo record of the finished job before our technician leaves, which shows the lock installed, the door alignment, and the model and serial number of the part. All smart lock installations are covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it isn’t done right, we make it right, no argument, no re-dispatch fee. We also stock Schlage, Kwikset, and Medeco parts for mixed-hardware buildings.
DIY or Call Us?

You can safely change the batteries, clean the keypad with a dry cloth, and check whether the strike plate screws have loosened. If the bolt is binding, tightening those screws and adjusting the plate is within a careful owner’s reach. But here’s where DIY goes wrong on Mul-T-Lock smart locks: the cylinder and tailpiece assembly is not a drop-in swap. The 13mm tailpiece I mentioned has to be oriented correctly, the clutch has to be seated at the right depth, and the programming reset procedure is model-specific. We’ve seen owners brick a $400 ENTR by holding the reset button too long, and we’ve seen smart locks bolted onto doors so badly misaligned that the motor failed within three months. If the motor grinds, the clutch slips, or the keypad won’t program, call (331) 310-8471. A trained technician with the right part costs less than replacing a smart lock you broke trying to save the service call.
FAQs
An ENTR smart lock typically lasts 5-7 years in a New York City entry door before the motor or clutch needs service, and that’s if the door is aligned and the lock is cleaned occasionally. The SMARTair commercial line lasts longer because it’s serviced on a schedule. Our installs in coastal neighborhoods like the Rockaways or Brighton Beach sometimes fail earlier due to salt air on the circuit contacts. Call (331) 310-8471 if you’re near year five and noticing intermittent operation.
The motor module, clutch assembly, and wireless boards on ENTR models are replaceable parts, which usually runs $185-$265 versus $385-$495 for a full replacement. If you have a discontinued CodeSecure, repair parts are mostly gone and replacement is the honest recommendation. We’ll tell you which path makes sense after a quick diagnostic, and the quote is in writing before anything is opened up.
A full Mul-T-Lock smart lock swap takes 45-90 minutes, including removing the old lock, installing and aligning the new one, programming your codes, and pairing the app. A module repair is usually 30 minutes. We bring the common parts on the truck, so there’s no second trip.
Yes. Our trucks carry ENTR motor modules, clutches, tailpieces, and complete lock sets, plus SMARTair components in our shop inventory. If your building uses a specific keyway, we cut and program keys to match the existing cylinders so you don’t need to rekey the whole floor. If we don’t have an unusual part on hand, we tell you before dispatch and give you a firm arrival window.
