Kwikset Deadbolt Installation: The New York City Owner’s Guide
Kwikset deadbolt installation in New York City typically runs $145 to $285 fully installed, including the deadbolt, labor, strike reinforcement, and a documented photo record of the finished work. Our trucks in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens carry Kwikset deadbolts in every common finish and backset, so we can usually complete a same-day deadbolt installation when you call before 3 p.m. The way most New York City owners discover their deadbolt has failed is simple: the key turns but the bolt doesn’t throw, or the thumbturn spins freely while the door stays unlocked.
What we find on service calls across the five boroughs is consistent. The internal tailpiece, the small metal bar connecting the cylinder to the bolt mechanism, has sheared or slipped out of its slot. In older Kwikset models, the bolt itself wears a groove after seven to ten years of daily use, especially in prewar buildings where door alignment shifts seasonally. And in a city where humidity swings from August swamp to January radiator-dry, the zinc alloy internals on entry-grade Kwikset hardware corrode faster than the same model would in a drier climate.
We are an independent locksmith that installs and services Kwikset hardware. We are not affiliated with Kwikset or Spectrum Brands.
Which Kwikset Models This Applies To
Most Kwikset deadbolts we install in New York City fall into three series: the 660, the 980, and the SmartKey 980. The 660 is a single-cylinder deadbolt with a zinc bolt housing and a 5-pin cylinder. It is the most common deadbolt in New York City rental buildings and co-op apartments. The 980 is a heavier-duty model with an adjustable bolt that fits both 2-3/8″ and 2-3/4″ backsets, and it includes an anti-pry shield on the bolt. The SmartKey 980 adds Kwikset’s rekeyable cylinder, which lets you rekey the lock yourself without removing it from the door.
Here is the compatibility gotcha that trips up New York City owners: the Kwikset adjustable-latch deadbolts use a two-piece bolt assembly that requires the faceplate to be held in a specific orientation during installation. If the faceplate is rotated 180 degrees before the screws go in, the bolt will bind intermittently, work for a week, then fail. We see this on DIY installs regularly enough that it is the first thing we check when a customer says their new deadbolt worked, then stopped.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for Kwikset specifically, we install genuine Kwikset hardware in almost every case. The aftermarket tailpieces and bolts sold for Kwikset deadbolts are dimensionally close but not exact, and the difference shows up as a stiff thumbturn or a key that only works when you jiggle it. Kwikset’s own parts are inexpensive enough that aftermarket savings rarely justify the callbacks. We stock the Kwikset 660, 980, and SmartKey models on the truck in satin nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, and polished brass. If a customer needs a finish we don’t carry, we can usually have it from our supplier by the next business day.
Signs Your Kwikset Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

- Key turns but the bolt does not move. The tailpiece has slipped out of the bolt’s T-slot. We see this most often after a door has been slammed repeatedly, which can bend the tailpiece enough to disengage it. The fix is a new tailpiece, not a new lock.
- Thumbturn spins without resistance. This is either a tailpiece that has sheared off internally or the bolt’s rack has stripped. On Kwikset bolts over eight years old, the rack teeth wear down and stop engaging the thumbturn gear.
- Deadbolt is hard to throw or requires lifting the door. The strike plate and the bolt hole are no longer aligned. In New York City this is usually seasonal. Wood frame buildings in Brooklyn and Queens expand in summer humidity and contract in winter dry heat, and a deadbolt that worked perfectly in June can bind by January. The fix is often a strike plate adjustment, not a new deadbolt.
- Key is stiff or only works in one direction. The cylinder pins are worn, or the key itself is a worn copy. Kwikset’s brass pins wear faster than the cylinder body, and once the cuts on the key no longer match the pin heights, the key fight you every time.
- Deadbolt does not fully extend into the strike. The bolt is a 2-3/8″ backset installed on a door prepped for 2-3/4″, or vice versa. The bolt only extends halfway into the strike hole, and the door can be pried open with a flat bar in under a minute. This is one we flag immediately on inspection because the lock looks like it is locking, but it is not actually securing anything.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York City, a Kwikset deadbolt installation runs $145 to $285 all-in. Entry-grade Kwikset 660 deadbolts installed on a standard prepped door sit at the lower end, typically $145 to $185. The Kwikset 980 and SmartKey models run $195 to $285, with the higher end covering doors that need re-boring, strike plate replacement, or a finish that requires a special order.
The parts and labor are not separated because the price you receive on the phone is the price on the invoice. That is Haven Standard Clause 1, and it has been the rule since 2002. No technician enters a New York City apartment with discretion to adjust the number at the door. The written quote includes the deadbolt, installation, strike plate adjustment or replacement, and the photo record we leave with you at completion, a documented standard on every Novak Lock & Security visit.
The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the deadbolt installation is not done right, we make it right within the year, no invoice.
We also answer the phone live, 24/7. If your deadbolt fails at 11 p.m. on a Wednesday, a person answers. Daniel Novak has been doing this long enough to know that is when lock failures actually happen.
DIY or Call Us?

Deadbolt installation is not a high-tension job like a garage door spring or an electrical panel. You will not hurt yourself changing a deadbolt. What you will hurt is the door and the lock, because the two most common DIY failures on Kwikset deadbolts in New York City are a poorly aligned strike plate and a tailpiece installed with the flat side facing the wrong way. Both failures produce the same result: a lock that looks installed but does not actually lock.
What you can safely check yourself: whether the bolt seats fully into the strike when the door is closed, and whether the screws on the strike plate are the original 3/4″ screws or upgraded 3″ screws that bite into the door framing. If the deadbolt works smoothly and the bolt seats completely, the installation is sound. If the key fights you or the bolt only partially extends, stop using the lock and call (331) 310-8471. The name on the van is the same name on the invoice, and the price is written before anyone touches your door.
Frequently Asked Questions
A Kwikset 660 deadbolt in daily use lasts seven to ten years in a typical New York City apartment. The bolt rack and tailpiece are the first components to fail, not the cylinder. In buildings with heavy humidity swings, like prewar walk-ups with radiator heat, we see failure on the earlier end of that range. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation for one full year. Call (331) 310-8471 if your deadbolt is binding, spinning, or not seating fully.
Yes, and we will tell you if the repair makes sense. Tailpiece replacement runs $35 to $65. Strike plate realignment runs $45 to $85. But if the bolt rack is stripped or the cylinder is pinned out beyond a simple rekey, replacement is the honest call. We will show you the worn part before we replace anything. Call (331) 310-8471 for a free estimate over the phone.
A standard Kwikset deadbolt installation on a prepped door takes 30 to 45 minutes from doorbell to photo record. The only exceptions are doors that need re-boring or a worn strike plate that requires a longer screw swap, which adds 15 to 20 minutes. We schedule New York City deadbolt installs in a one-hour window. Call (331) 310-8471 to schedule.
