Kwikset Locksmith in Brooklyn, NY | Novak Lock & Security
We’re an independent Manhattan Kwikset service provider covering all of Brooklyn, from Bay Ridge to East New York, with a live person answering the phone 24/7 at (331) 310-8471. What separates our Kwikset work here is simple: we’ve rebuilt these locks inside Brooklyn’s late-1800s and early-1900s brownstones and brick rowhouses, where a Kwikset deadbolt often sits beside a 1920s Corbin mortise in the same entryway. We repair, re-key, and install Kwikset hardware daily, and every job starts with a written price before we touch a screw. Daniel Novak has spent nearly two decades working doors, deadbolts, and cylinders across the five boroughs, and the name on the van is the same name on the invoice.
Why Brooklyn Residents Choose Us for Kwikset Service
We stock genuine Kwikset OEM cylinders, pins, springs, and tailpieces on our vans, which means a SmartKey re-key or deadbolt swap doesn’t require a second appointment. That matters in Brooklyn, where a seized cylinder on a Brighton Beach door exposed to Atlantic salt air can’t wait three days for a parts order. Our technicians are background-checked and uniformed, and every visit ends with a documented photo record of the work, per Haven Standard Clause 9. If you need a Kwikset sales & service shop that knows the difference between a Titan and a Halifax, we’re the crew that has been working these locks since before SmartKey existed. Daniel Novak grew up in Astoria, two blocks from the elevated N train, and learned this trade the slow way: community college mechanical technology, then an apprenticeship under a retired Midtown commercial locksmith. We don’t upsell you into a lock you don’t need. We inspect, we tell you what we found, and we give you the price in writing.
Common Kwikset Locksmith Problems We Solve in Brooklyn

- SmartKey reset cradle failure. The tiny plastic reset cradle inside the SmartKey cylinder cracks or the sidebar springs jam, leaving the lock stuck in learn mode. We see this constantly after tenant turnover, when someone forced the re-key process without the original key. Fix: swap in a fresh OEM SmartKey cylinder, re-key on the spot, preserve the lock body.
- Stiff, frozen keyways in January and February. Brooklyn’s freeze-thaw cycles swell old-growth wooden door frames in brownstones. Bolts no longer align with strike plates, and keys bind. We re-align the bolt, adjust the strike plate, and lubricate the cylinder with a dry lubricant that won’t attract street grime.
- Salt-air corrosion on coastal cylinder pins. In Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and the Bay Ridge waterfront, Atlantic salt air accelerates pin-stack corrosion. Kwikset cylinders seize, keys snap off in the lock, and pin stacks gum up. We clean and re-pin cylinders with OEM pins, or recommend a better-sealed cylinder when the housing itself is compromised.
- Halo smart lock motor stalls. Dirt from Brooklyn’s drafty brownstone entries, combined with salt air near the water, leads to motor gear binding after a year or two. The Halo’s motor strains, whines, and finally refuses to throw the bolt. We disassemble, clean the gear train, and replace the motor assembly when it’s worn past saving.
- Aluminum tailpiece snapping. Older Kwikset knob and lever sets use an aluminum tailpiece that snaps after a break-in attempt or a clumsy key turn. This happens most in Brooklyn winter when keyways freeze and tenants force the key. We carry OEM and braided-steel aftermarket tailpieces on the van and can often repair this on the first visit.
Kwikset Service in Brooklyn: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Brooklyn’s dominant housing stock is the 1880s to 1940s brownstone or limestone rowhouse, plus brick two-to-four-family attached homes, almost all fitted with heavy solid-wood doors and mortise lock pockets. That means a Kwikset deadbolt on a Park Slope brownstone is frequently mounted in a door that was drilled for a Corbin or Sargent mortise decades before Kwikset’s cylindrical hardware existed. The result is a cross-bore that sits slightly off-center or too shallow, which puts uneven pressure on the Kwikset spindle and tailpiece. Add NYC’s Multiple Dwelling Law, which obligates landlords to provide working locks and keys at every tenant turnover, and you get a uniquely Brooklyn wear pattern: Kwikset deadbolts and knob sets here are re-keyed and cycled far more often than in a single-family suburb. SmartKey’s 20-second re-key feature is almost tailor-made for this. No other city in America has the same legally mandated re-keying pipeline layered on top of a rental-heavy housing stock. That’s why SmartKey calls are a weekly occurrence for our Brooklyn vans, and why we keep OEM SmartKey cylinders in every service vehicle.
Kwikset Models & Products We Service in Brooklyn

We work on the full residential line: Kwikset SmartKey 980 deadbolts and knob sets, the older Titan high-security deadbolt line, Halifax levers (common in Brooklyn rentals), and the Halo Wi-Fi smart lock. Our parts approach is specific. We stock genuine Kwikset OEM pins, springs, cylinders, and tailpieces for immediate repairs, but we also carry aftermarket braided-steel latch bolts and reinforced strike plates when a brownstone door needs a stronger-than-stock component. Our honest repair-vs-replace stance: if a basic Kwikset knob or deadbolt has failed mechanical internals, we usually recommend replacing the whole lockset rather than chasing a $20 repair. Your money goes further. For a SmartKey cylinder problem, we always try to preserve the lock body and swap just the cylinder or reset mechanism before recommending a new lockset.
Kwikset Service Pricing in Brooklyn
Here’s what Kwikset work typically costs with our Lock Installation & Rekey in Brooklyn. A standard SmartKey re-key runs $25 to $35 per cylinder, quoted in writing before we start. Replacing a Kwikset deadbolt with a new SmartKey 980 typically runs $95 to $160 in parts plus labor, depending on whether the existing prep needs correction. A SmartKey cylinder swap, which preserves the lock body, runs $65 to $90 including the OEM cylinder. Halo smart lock installation runs $149 to $199 plus the lock itself, and we’ll tell you in advance if your brownstone door needs additional prep. No call-out surcharge is added on arrival, and the price we quote on the phone is the price on the invoice, per Haven Standard Clause 1. Call (331) 310-8471 for a free estimate.

FAQs - Kwikset Locksmith in Brooklyn
Yes. We can key a SmartKey lock to a master key, tenant keys, and a change key in a single visit, and we can do it without removing the lock from the door. For a brownstone with three or four units, we’ll set up the master key system on site, test every key at every lock, and leave you with a written keying schedule. This is standard multi-family work for us. If you want a full security review of the whole building, we do that too, and the estimate is free. Call (331) 310-8471.
Your door frame is swelling. Park Slope’s brownstones sit on old-growth wooden frames that absorb moisture and shift with freeze-thaw cycles. When the wood moves, the bolt no longer aligns with the strike plate, and the deadbolt binds. It’s rarely the lock itself that’s failed. We fix it by re-aligning the bolt, adjusting or replacing the strike plate, and lubricating the cylinder with a dry graphite or PTFE lubricant that won’t gum up in the cold. In some cases, the remedy is re-drilling the strike screw holes and re-seating the plate flush. We’ll tell you what we found and what we did.
For a street-level door, we’d say this plainly: a SmartKey deadbolt alone is not enough in most Brooklyn neighborhoods. The SmartKey cylinder is bump-resistant and pick-resistant, which is good, but the locking bolt itself is not much stronger than a basic Kwikset. A street-level door needs a reinforced strike plate with 3-inch screws into the frame stud, and ideally a secondary deadbolt or rim lock mounted higher on the door. We’ll install a braided-steel latch bolt and reinforced strike plate as standard practice on any street-level Kwikset install in Brooklyn. It’s a $20-to-$40 upgrade that changes the security equation meaningfully.
No old key needed. On a Kwikset SmartKey, we can reset the lock to a new key in about 20 seconds using the SmartKey reset tool, without removing the lock from the door. On older Kwikset cylinders, we remove the cylinder, dump the old pins, install fresh OEM pins to a new key, and reinstall the cylinder in about five minutes. This is the legally mandated re-key that NYC’s Multiple Dwelling Law requires at tenant turnover, and we document the work for your records. Call (331) 310-8471 and we’ll get a tech to Ditmas Park the same day.
Sometimes. The Halo uses a standard Kwikset SmartKey cylinder, so if your existing deadbolt is a SmartKey model, we can key the new Halo to your current key. If you have an older Kwikset without SmartKey, we’d either replace the cylinder or re-key your other locks to match the new Halo. Either way, we’ll install the Halo, connect it to your Wi-Fi, and walk you through the app before we leave. Installation is $149 to $199 plus the lock, quoted in writing before we start.
