Kwikset Locksmith in New York City, NY | Novak Lock & Security
We’re Novak Lock & Security, and we provide Emergency Locksmith in New York City with independent Kwikset service across all five boroughs. The thing that makes our Kwikset work here different is simple: most of the city’s housing stock was built before Kwikset existed, which means we’re constantly adapting cylindrical Kwikset hardware into mortise pockets, out-of-square brownstone frames, and buildings with master-key systems we can’t touch without the super present. Call (331) 310-8471 for service. We quote a firm price on the phone before anyone is dispatched.
We’ve rebuilt hundreds of Kwikset cylinders, deadbolts, and SmartKey mechanisms in New York City apartments and co-ops, and we know exactly where these locks fail in this city’s specific conditions. Daniel Novak, our owner, grew up in Astoria two blocks from the elevated N train and has been working New York City doors and deadbolts for going on two decades. He learned the trade at Queensborough Community College before apprenticing under a retired locksmith who serviced Midtown commercial accounts. That background matters when your Kwikset deadbolt won’t throw on a January night and the frame has shifted a quarter inch since Thanksgiving.
We service every Kwikset line in New York City: 660 deadbolts, 980 deadbolts, SmartKey knobs and levers, and Halo smart locks. Independent service, no manufacturer affiliation. Full pricing in writing before we start. Call (331) 310-8471.
Why New York City Residents Choose Us for Kwikset Service
Kwikset is the most common residential lock brand in the country, and New York City apartment turnover keeps it that way here too. Landlords install Kwikset because it’s affordable and easy to rekey between tenants. The problem is that Kwikset’s cylindrical design assumes a door frame that stays put. New York City door frames, especially in pre-war buildings, rarely do.
We know Kwikset hardware from the inside out. Our bench techs have disassembled and rebuilt enough SmartKey sidebars and 660 latch assemblies to tell you within five minutes whether a cylinder should be repaired or replaced. We use genuine Kwikset cylinders, latches, and strike plates when replacement is called for. When older Kwikset models have discontinued OEM tailpieces or springs, we source quality aftermarket equivalents that fit correctly. We’re a local New York City shop, which means we can often reach you the same day, and our dispatchers answer the phone around the clock. Daniel Novak built this company on residential work across the boroughs, and he runs every job, Kwikset or otherwise, under Haven Standard Clause 1: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice.
Common Kwikset Locksmith Problems We Solve in New York City

- SmartKey cylinders jamming or spinning without engaging. The tiny sidebar wafers inside a SmartKey lock are precision parts, and New York City hallway dust plus seasonal humidity fouls them over time. Keys get stuck, or they spin freely without turning the cylinder. We often repair these by disassembling and cleaning the sidebar mechanism, assuming the cylinder body is sound.
- Kwikset knobs retrofitted into old mortise cutouts that sag and misalign. This is common in pre-war walk-ups where a previous owner swapped the original mortise lock for a cylindrical Kwikset. The retrofit plate rarely sits flush, and as the building settles it shifts. Latch alignment fails, the deadlatch jams, and you can’t get the door to close right.
- Kwikset 660 deadbolts that won’t fully throw on out-of-square brownstone doors. Brownstone frames swell in winter and shift seasonally. A 660 deadbolt installed when the frame was square binds against the strike plate when it isn’t. This creates lockouts and doors that look locked but aren’t actually secured.
- Salt-air corrosion seizing keyways and latch bolts near the water. Red Hook, the Rockaways, and parts of Staten Island see accelerated corrosion in exposed Kwikset hardware. Keys get difficult to insert. Latches stick. Sometimes the fix is disassembly and lubrication; sometimes the cylinder is too far gone and needs replacement.
- New Kwikset hardware that fails because of improper installation, not a defective lock. We regularly find deadbolts installed with the wrong strike plate or screws that are too short for a New York City steel door frame. The lock wasn’t the problem. The installation was.
Kwikset Service in New York City: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
New York City’s Housing Maintenance Code, specifically Admin. Code §27-2043, requires landlords to install and maintain approved deadbolts and door viewers in rental apartments. That sounds straightforward until you realize most New York City residential buildings are co-ops or condos, not rentals, and those buildings run on restricted master-key systems controlled by a managing agent or board. A Kwikset cylinder swap in a Manhattan co-op is rarely a walk-in job. The building’s keyway is often a proprietary Medeco or Mul-T-Lock system held exclusively by the managing agent. Any replacement cylinder we install has to work within that keyway, the super usually needs to be present, and the board may need to approve the work before we even arrive. For a Kwikset owner, this means a lock replacement that would take fifteen minutes in a single-family home in Queens might require a day of coordination in a doorman building on the Upper East Side. We’re used to that coordination. We call the super, we schedule around the board’s approval, and we document everything with a photo record when we leave.
Last February in Park Slope, our tech responded to a lockout in a brownstone co-op where the owner had a Kwikset SmartKey deadbolt that jammed during a cold snap. The door frame had shifted enough that the bolt bound against the strike. He freed the bolt, rekeyed the SmartKey cylinder, and adjusted the strike plate to restore a clean throw, all while the building super verified the master key still worked. That’s what Kwikset service in New York City actually looks like.
Kwikset Models & Products We Service in New York City

We service the full Kwikset residential line. The 660 deadbolt is the workhorse we see most often in rental turnovers and new condo punch lists. The 980 offers a heavier-duty build for exterior doors. SmartKey knobs and levers are everywhere, and their rekey mechanism is both their best feature and their most common failure point. The Halo smart lock is Kwikset’s Wi-Fi connected deadbolt, and our Lock Installation & Rekey in New York City covers these in converted lofts and high-rise units.
Our parts approach is specific: genuine Kwikset cylinders, latches, and strike plates whenever replacement is required. Older Kwikset models sometimes have discontinued OEM tailpieces, springs, or mounting screws. In those cases we source quality aftermarket equivalents that match the original dimensions. We keep common Kwikset parts in our New York City vans so most single-cylinder jobs don’t require a second visit. If you’re looking for Kwikset sales & service, we can also source and install new hardware if you’d rather upgrade than repair.
Kwikset Service Pricing in New York City
Here’s what you can expect to pay for Kwikset work in New York City, quoted honestly because hiding the price contradicts the entire reason we exist.
- Kwikset cylinder rekey: $25-$40 per cylinder, depending on the SmartKey generation and condition.
- SmartKey jam repair (disassembly, cleaning, reassembly): $75-$150, assuming the cylinder body is sound.
- Kwikset 660 deadbolt installation: $110-$180, including hardware, labor, and strike plate alignment.
- Kwikset Halo smart lock installation: $180-$275, including door prep if needed and Wi-Fi pairing.
- Full Kwikset knob and deadbolt replacement: $150-$250 per door, hardware included.
The total depends on your door condition, whether we’re retrofitting into a mortise cutout, and whether the building requires coordination with a super or board. What it does not depend on is how desperate you are. The price we quote on the phone is the price on the invoice, and that has been our rule since 2002. Call (331) 310-8471 for a firm quote before anyone is dispatched.

FAQs - Kwikset Locksmith in New York City
Yes, a lost learn tool does not make your SmartKey lock un-rekeyable. A Kwikset SmartKey cylinder can be rekeyed using a functioning key and the manual rekey procedure, or by disassembling the cylinder if no functioning key exists. The learn tool is a convenience, not a requirement. If the cylinder is damaged or the sidebar wafers are fouled, we repair the mechanism first. Call (331) 310-8471 and we’ll tell you what your specific lock needs.
In New York City pre-war buildings, it’s usually a door problem that becomes a lock problem. Cold, wet winters cause the wood frames in brownstones and walk-ups to swell and shift. Your deadbolt’s throw falls out of alignment with the strike plate, and the bolt binds. The fix is adjusting or repositioning the strike plate, and sometimes planing the frame. A new deadbolt won’t solve it if the frame is still out of square. We can tell you after one look. Call (331) 310-8471 to schedule an inspection.
It depends entirely on the keyway your building uses. Many New York City co-ops and rental buildings run restricted master-key systems, typically Medeco or Mul-T-Lock keyways controlled by the managing agent. A standard Kwikset cylinder cannot be cut to those keyways. We’ve done Kwikset installations in buildings where the super approves a separate Kwikset cylinder for the unit door, but we’ve also had jobs where the board requires the existing high-security cylinder to stay. We coordinate with your building management before touching anything. Call (331) 310-8471 and we’ll walk you through what your building will allow.
Usually not a lock defect. The Halo connects over Wi-Fi, and in dense Manhattan buildings the 2.4 GHz band is saturated by neighboring routers, which causes intermittent disconnects. Metal door frames and concrete hallway walls also degrade the signal. We troubleshoot placement of the router, the Halo’s firmware version, and the motor calibration before assuming the hardware is bad. Most Halo connectivity issues we see in New York City are environmental, not mechanical.
We can, but rental unit work in New York City, including NYCHA properties, has to follow the Housing Maintenance Code and the lease terms. Tenants cannot change locks without landlord permission in most cases, and the landlord must be able to access the unit. We install Kwikset hardware in rental units when the lease allows it and the property owner authorizes the work. We document everything, which protects both tenant and landlord. Call (331) 310-8471 if you need help navigating it.
