Sargent Residential Locksmith in New York City: What to Know First

We service Sargent residential locks and exit devices across New York City as an independent Sargent service provider. Most Sargent residential callouts we handle are lock changes, rekeys, deadbolt replacements, and lockouts on older Sargent mortise locks and newer Sargent keypad or interconnected units. A typical New York City Sargent residential job runs between $95 and $280 depending on whether we are rekeying an existing cylinder, replacing a worn mortise body, or installing new hardware. We quote the full price on the phone before anyone is dispatched, and that is the price on the invoice. We are not affiliated with or authorized by Sargent; we are an independent locksmith company that works on Sargent hardware every week.

If you own a home in New York City with Sargent locks, this page covers how they fail, what repair actually costs here, and how we work. Call (331) 310-8471 and a live person answers, 24/7.

How Sargent Products Fail, and How We Fix Them

  • Sargent mortise locks (the 7700 and 8200 series you see in older New York City homes and prewar apartments): worn spindle hubs. The hub is the brass or steel part the spindle drives when you turn the knob. After fifteen or twenty years of daily use, the square hole rounds out and the knob starts to free-spin or catches halfway through the throw. We replace the hub with an OEM Sargent part when available, or a machine-shop match when the series is discontinued. This is not a lubricant problem. Lubricant will not fix a rounded hub.
  • Sargent interconnected locks (the kind with a deadbolt and knob in one trim plate, common on side doors and garage entry doors): misalignment between the deadbolt and the latch. In New York City, houses settle. Frost heave and the seasonal movement of brick and brownstone door frames push the strike plate a few millimeters off, and the deadbolt stops throwing cleanly. We realign the strike, shim the hinge if the door has dropped, and re-time the interlock so the knob retracts the deadbolt on the first turn, not the third.
  • Sargent keypad locks (the KP series and residential grade Sargent Profile units): dead keypad buttons from alkaline battery corrosion. This one is specific. New York City summers are humid, and apartments without central air push moisture into the battery compartment. Alkaline batteries swell and leak, and the corrosion eats the membrane switch contacts. We clean the contact pads with a proper electrical contact cleaner, replace the battery pack with lithium cells, and if the keypad is beyond rescue, we quote a factory replacement keypad assembly in writing before we order it.
  • Sargent Keso and high-security cylinders on older co-op and converted brownstone units: stuck sidebar pins. These cylinders use a side bar that engages with pin tumblers along a track. When the track cakes with old graphite and dust, the sidebar will not drop and the key goes in but will not turn. The fix is not forcing the key. We disassemble the cylinder, clean the sidebar channel, and reassemble with a dry film lubricant that does not attract New York City grit. Graphite is the worst thing you can use in a Sargent high-security cylinder, and we see it all the time.
  • Sargent rim cylinders on New York City apartment doors: broken tailpieces. The tailpiece is the flat metal bar that connects the cylinder to the bolt. On Sargent rim cylinders from the 1970s and 1980s, the tailpiece snaps when someone slams the door with the bolt extended. We replace the tailpiece or the complete cylinder, and if the bolt is the original, we check it for wear at the same time because a new tailpiece on a worn bolt just moves the failure point.

Our Sargent Residential Locksmith Process

Our Sargent Residential Locksmith Process
  1. 1
You call. A live person answers. We ask for the address, the type of Sargent lock, and what is happening. We give you a firm price range on that first call. The dispatcher is not allowed to give you a teaser price, and the technician is not permitted to change it at the door. This rule has been in place since 2002, and it is Haven Standard Clause 1: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice.
  2. 2
We diagnose on site. Before we touch anything, we look at the lock, the door, the frame, and the strike. We check for the failure points specific to Sargent hardware: hub wear, sidebar drag, keypad corrosion, tailpiece condition, strike alignment. We tell you what we found and what it will cost to fix, in writing, before we start.
  3. 3
We make the parts call together. If the repair needs a part, we explain OEM Sargent versus quality aftermarket. For high-security cylinders and lock bodies, we recommend OEM and quote it that way. For trim plates, latch bolts, and strike plates, a proven aftermarket part often costs half as much and fits the same. You decide. The price on the written scope does not change based on what we choose.
  4. 4
We do the work. We repair or replace the hardware, rekey the cylinder if needed, and key all Sargent locks on the home to one key if that is what you want. Every technician is background-checked and uniformed, and every job is done to the same documented standard across all ten Haven brands.
  5. 5
We test, document, and walk you through it. We cycle the lock ten times in front of you. We photograph the work before and after. You get a documented photo record, the written scope, and the warranty on the spot, not emailed later. If the lock does not throw smoothly, we are not done.
  6. 6
The 365-Day Done Right Promise kicks in. If the repair fails within a year, we come back and make it right. No re-diagnosis fee, no argument. The name on the van is the same name on the invoice.

What Sargent Residential Locksmith Costs in New York City

Honest ranges, quoted in writing before we leave the phone call:

  • Sargent mortise lock repair (hub replacement, realignment, or latch repair): $120-$220 depending on the series and condition.
  • Sargent lock rekey: $25-$45 per cylinder, plus a service call of $45-$75. Most single-family homes in New York City have three to five cylinders; a full-home rekey typically runs $160-$280.
  • Sargent deadbolt installation on a standard wood or metal door: $180-$320 including the hardware, depending on whether we are reinforcing the frame and what grade of deadbolt you choose.
  • Sargent keypad lock replacement: $210-$390 for a residential keypad lock, installed, programmed, and keyed to match your other Sargent locks.
  • Emergency lockout on a Sargent lock: $95-$160 for a standard residential door, with no extra after-hours charge. If we cannot pick it clean, we tell you before we drill, and the replacement cylinder is priced on the spot.

What moves the price: the age of the lock, whether the door is metal or solid wood, the borough and building type, and whether we are matching existing keys or issuing new ones. The price is the price. Bring us another locksmith’s written estimate and we will review it at no charge.

Call (331) 310-8471 for an exact quote. The estimate is free, and it is the number on the invoice.

Why New York City Homeowners Call Novak Lock & Security for Sargent Work

Why New York City Homeowners Call Novak Lock & Security for Sargent Work

We work on Sargent hardware constantly, not occasionally. Our technicians can identify a worn 7700 spindle hub by feel before they take the lock apart, and that matters in a building where the door has to be secured the same day. Every job starts with a written price and ends with a documented record. Every technician is background-checked and uniformed. Calls are answered by a live person at 3 p.m. and 3 a.m. And when a Sargent lock is not worth saving, we give you a straight recommendation across the brands we service, including Schlage, Kwikset, and Medeco. The replacement gets priced in writing, the same as everything else.

Daniel Novak, our owner, grew up in Astoria, Queens, and learned the trade through the mechanical technology program at Queensborough Community College before apprenticing under a retired locksmith who serviced Midtown commercial accounts. He has been working New York City doors, deadbolts, and cylinders for going on two decades. The approach he built the company on is simple: name the part, state the price, and document what was done.
