Schlage Lock Rekeying: The New York City Owner’s Guide
Schlage lock rekeying in New York City typically costs $25 to $45 per cylinder, including the labor to repin the lock and two new keys, and we usually complete it the same day you call. The written price you get on the phone is the price on the invoice - Haven Standard Clause 1, in place since 2002. Most people discover they need a rekey the day they close on a new apartment, the week a tenant moves out, or the morning they realize a spare key has been in someone else’s pocket for longer than they can account for.
We stock the Schlage pin kits and key blanks on our trucks so there’s no second trip, no waiting on a parts order, and no reason to leave a lock unkeyed overnight. If you have a Schlage deadbolt, knob, lever, or handleset from the last thirty years, we can rekey it to a new key on the spot.
Which Schlage Models This Applies To
This covers the Schlage F-series residential line (the F51 deadbolt, F10 passage knob, and F40 bedroom/bath lock), the B-series deadbolts, and the older A-series that still turns up in prewar and postwar buildings across the five boroughs. We also rekey Schlage’s commercial D-series and L-series mortise cylinders - the ones you’ll find on self-closing doors in co-op corridors and small office suites. If you’re not sure what you have, look at the edge of the latch faceplate: Schlage stamps the model number there on most residential hardware from the last two decades.
One New York-specific reality: cylinders in prewar buildings often have decades of paint, grime, and prior servicing layered on them. We see Schlage cylinders in brownstones and prewar co-ops daily that need the pins replaced entirely, not just a simple rekey, because the old pins have flattened and the springs have lost tension. We carry both OEM Schlage pins and aftermarket equivalents; for standard residential rekeys the aftermarket pins perform identically, and we’ll tell you when your hardware genuinely warrants OEM parts instead. Novak Lock & Security is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with Schlage.
Signs Your Schlage Lock Needs Rekeying

- The key turns, but only with a fight. The bottom pins in your cylinder have worn down over thousands of insertions. This is the most common failure we find in Schlage locks that are eight to fifteen years old, especially on exterior doors that see weather on two sides.
- You just moved in. You have no way to know who holds copies of the existing key: the previous owner’s dog walker, the contractor who did the kitchen, the ex who “swears” they returned everything. Rekeying converts that uncertainty into a known key count, on day one.
- A key snapped off in the cylinder. This is more common in cold snaps when brass gets brittle under zero-degree wind chill on an east-facing terrace door. We extract the broken key, inspect the plug for bent wafers, and rekey rather than reissue the same worn bitting.
- You lost a key, or it was stolen. Replacing the lock is the brute-force answer; rekeying is the smart answer. Same security result, same new-key exclusivity, a fraction of the hardware cost.
- You need “one key for everything.” We regularly key Schlage cylinders alike across a front door, service door, and storage lock, so one key runs the perimeter. That’s a rekeying job with real convenience value for owners of multi-entry brownstones and duplexes.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In New York City, expect to pay $25 to $45 per cylinder for a standard Schlage rekey, with two keys per cylinder included. The range accounts for cylinder type: a knob rekey sits at the lower end, a mortise cylinder or high-security variant runs higher. If we’re also replacing worn pins, springs, or a damaged plug, we’ll tell you the additional parts cost before we turn a screw - and it stays in the written scope.
Every rekey includes a documented photo record of the work, left with you at completion, and every rekey is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the new key doesn’t turn smoothly a month later, we come back and make it right. There are no call-out surcharges, no “arrival fees,” and no price changes at the door. The number on the phone is the number on your invoice.
DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the condition of your Schlage lock before calling us: try the key in both directions, note if the deadbolt throws fully, and check whether the strike plate is tight. What you should not attempt on your own is taking the cylinder apart without the right follower tool and pin kit. Rekeying a Schlage cylinder involves removing the plug while holding the top pins and springs in place; slip once, and pins and springs end up on the floor in an order you won’t reconstruct. We’ve fixed enough well-intentioned DIY attempts to say this plainly: the $30 you save is rarely worth the second service call.
If you’re in a co-op or condo, also check your building’s rules before rekeying - some boards require a copy of the new key for emergency access. We’re familiar with those requirements across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island, and we can cut the building key as part of the same visit. Call (331) 310-8471 and you’ll get a live person, a firm price, and usually a same-day appointment.
FAQs
A correctly done Schlage rekey lasts as long as the pins and springs in the cylinder remain in good condition - typically ten to fifteen years on an exterior door in New York City, where seasonal temperature swings and salt air accelerate wear on brass components. Interior locks can go decades between rekeys.
Yes, but the repair usually is the rekey. When we open a worn Schlage cylinder, we replace the flattened bottom pins, worn springs, and any damaged plug components, then key it to your new key. That gives you fresh internals and new-key security in a single procedure. Call (331) 310-8471 and we’ll tell you exactly what your cylinder needs after we look at it.
A standard Schlage knob or deadbolt rekey takes fifteen to twenty minutes per cylinder once we’re at the door. Mortise cylinders and multiple locks add time proportionally. Most residential jobs - three to five cylinders - are done within an hour and a half, including the photo record and new keys.
We stock Schlage pin kits, springs, plugs, and the most common modern key blanks on every truck, along with Kwikset and Medeco pins for mixed-keying jobs. If your Schlage hardware is an older or specialized model requiring a part we don’t carry, we can order it and schedule the rekey for the same week in most New York City cases.
