Deadbolt Won’t Line Up with the Frame

A deadbolt that won’t line up with the strike plate is almost always a door alignment problem, a settling foundation, or a strike plate that was never installed in the right position to begin with. The bolt and the hole it needs to enter are simply no longer pointing at each other. This is fixable, and in most cases a technician can sort it out in a single visit.

Call (331) 310-8471

What you’re experiencing is your deadbolt throw – the solid metal bolt that shoots out when you turn the key – hitting the face of the strike plate, the edge of the frame, or nothing at all instead of sliding cleanly into the mortise hole. Sometimes it catches partway and you can muscle the door locked. Sometimes it won’t engage at all. Either way, the lock itself is usually fine. The problem is the geometry between the door and the frame, and that geometry has changed.

Why It Happens

The Door Has Shifted or Swelled

Wood doors expand and contract with humidity and temperature changes through every season. A door that aligned perfectly when it was installed can drift enough over a few years that the bolt and the strike plate hole are off by a quarter inch or more. Look at the gap around your door when it’s closed: if it’s noticeably wider at the top than the bottom, or the door sits crooked in the frame, the door itself has moved. This is the most common cause of a misaligned deadbolt.

The House Has Settled

Houses settle. Foundations shift – sometimes gradually over years, sometimes more abruptly after a wet season or a drought. When the framing around a door shifts, the door frame can rack slightly out of square, pulling the strike plate away from where the bolt expects it to be. A sign of this is that other doors in the house also stick, bind, or show uneven gaps. If it’s just one door, it’s probably the door. If several doors are acting up at once, the house is telling you something.

The Strike Plate Was Never Quite Right

Strike plates are sometimes installed slightly off-center from the factory or by a previous installer who compensated with force instead of measurement. If the bolt has always been a little stiff and you’ve been nudging it into place for years, the plate was probably wrong from the start. The bolt will often leave a scratch mark or a worn spot on the frame above or below the hole – that mark tells you exactly how far off things are.

The Deadbolt Hardware Is Loose or Worn

The lock body itself can become loose inside the door if the mounting screws have backed out over time, shifting the bolt’s exit point by a small but significant amount. Try wiggling the lock by hand with the door open: if there’s any play in it, that’s a contributing factor. A worn or bent bolt throw can also prevent clean engagement even when everything else lines up correctly.

What to Do Right Now

What to Do Right Now
  • Stop forcing it. If you have to shove the door hard or muscle the key to get the bolt home, stop. Repeated force damages the bolt, the strike plate, and the door edge, and a damaged bolt is a harder fix than a misaligned one.
  • Lock the door another way if you can. If your door has a knob latch or a second lock that still operates, use it until the deadbolt is sorted. Don’t leave the deadbolt in a half-thrown position – that stresses the lock body.
  • Check the gap around the door. Stand inside, close the door fully, and look at the margin between the door and the frame on all four sides. Uneven gaps tell you whether the door has moved and in which direction.
  • Look for the scratch mark. Open the door and look at the strike plate and the frame around it. A fresh scratch or wear mark above or below the hole shows exactly how far out of alignment you are and in which direction.
  • Photograph everything before you call. Take a photo of the strike plate, the bolt, the gap around the door, and any visible wear or damage. Your local Novak Lock & Security team will ask these questions – having photos ready speeds up the diagnosis and the written estimate.

How We Fix It

When your local Novak Lock & Security technician arrives, the first thing they do is measure the offset – exactly how far and in which direction the bolt and the hole have parted ways. Most misalignment falls into one of two repair paths.

If the gap is small, the strike plate can be repositioned. The technician removes it, chisels the mortise to the correct location, installs the plate in the right spot, and fills the old screw holes so they hold properly. The bolt enters clean, the door locks without force, and the repair is done. This is the most common fix, and it falls under our Lock Installation & Rekey service.

If the door itself has moved significantly – swelled, warped, or settled out of square – the technician may adjust the hinges or plane the door edge to restore proper fit. On more significant settling, we’ll tell you plainly what’s structural and what’s ours to fix.

Either way, the price for this specific job is quoted in writing before anything starts. That’s not a policy we introduced recently – it’s how Novak Lock & Security has operated since 2002, and it’s what the 365-Day Done Right Promise is backed by: if the work isn’t right, we make it right.
