Smart Lock Stopped Working

When a smart lock stops working, the cause is almost always one of three things: a dead or failing battery, a firmware or connectivity glitch that has frozen the lock’s processor, or a mechanical fault inside the lock body itself. In most cases, the lock is still physically secure – it’s the electronic layer that has failed. A licensed technician can identify which layer is at fault in a single visit and restore full function, usually within the same appointment.

Smart locks are more complex than a keyed deadbolt by design. They combine a mechanical lock body with a circuit board, a wireless radio, a motor drive, and a credential reader – all of which have to agree with each other every time you authenticate. When one layer fails, the whole system reads as “stopped working,” even if most of it is fine. That’s why diagnosing this correctly matters: replace the wrong part and you’ll be back in the same spot by next month.

Why It Happens

1. Dead or Degraded Batteries

This is by far the most common cause, and it catches people off guard because most smart locks give little warning before they quit entirely. The lock may have been operating on low power for weeks, showing no obvious sign, and then simply stops responding one morning. If your lock has an LED indicator, a rapidly blinking red light or a series of beeps when you try to operate it is almost always a battery signal. If the motor sounds sluggish or the keypad dims briefly when you press a button, the batteries are the first thing to rule out.

2. Firmware or App Connectivity Failure

Smart locks receive periodic firmware updates pushed through their companion app or hub. A failed or interrupted update can leave the lock’s processor in a suspended state – it powers on but won’t accept commands from the keypad, the app, or a physical key fob. The tell is that the lock appears to have power (lights come on, buttons register a press) but nothing causes the bolt to move. A Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity drop can produce identical symptoms on hub-dependent locks like some August and Yale models.

3. Motor or Drive Gear Failure

The motor that drives the bolt is a mechanical component, and it wears. On high-use locks – a front door in a rental property, a home with teenagers, a unit that gets locked and unlocked 30 or 40 times a day – the drive gears can strip or the motor can burn out within three to five years. The diagnostic sign here is a grinding or clicking noise when the lock attempts to actuate, followed by no movement of the bolt. The electronics are working; the mechanics are not.

4. Misaligned Strike Plate or Door Shift

Wood doors move with humidity and seasonal temperature swings, and a door that has shifted even a few millimeters can cause the bolt to bind against the strike plate. The lock’s motor senses the resistance, interprets it as a jam, and stops the cycle as a safety measure. If your lock worked fine last season and now hesitates or fails mid-cycle, especially during the first cold spell or after a wet stretch, this is a strong candidate. You’ll typically hear the motor start and then stop before the bolt fully extends or retracts.

What to Do Right Now

What to Do Right Now
  • Replace the batteries before anything else. Use fresh alkaline cells from a new package – not leftover batteries from a drawer. Most smart locks take AA or AAA; check the back panel or the manufacturer’s label. If the lock comes back to life, you’ve found it.
  • Force-restart the lock’s processor. Remove all batteries, wait 30 seconds, and reinstall them. On hub-connected locks (Yale Access, August Wi-Fi), also power-cycle the hub. This clears most firmware freeze states without a factory reset.
  • Check the app and the lock independently. If the keypad responds but the app doesn’t – or vice versa – the problem is in the communication layer, not the lock body. Note which one is failing before you call; this helps the technician arrive with the right equipment.
  • Do not repeatedly force the bolt. If the bolt is binding mechanically and you keep commanding the lock to actuate, you risk stripping the drive gears, which turns a minor repair into a full replacement. One attempt is diagnostic. Repeated attempts are damaging.
  • Photograph the lock, the door edge, and the strike plate before anyone arrives. A photo of the current state of the bolt and frame alignment gives the technician a starting point and is consistent with how we document every visit under The Haven Standard. Your photos and ours together form the job record.

How We Fix It

When your local Novak Lock & Security technician arrives, the first thing they do is a systematic function check: battery voltage, motor response, credential reader, and mechanical bolt travel – in that order. This takes less than ten minutes and tells us exactly which layer failed. We bring a diagnostic kit that covers the major smart lock platforms including Schlage Encode, Baldwin Evolved, Yale Assure, and August Wi-Fi Pro, so we’re not guessing at compatibility on the doorstep.

If the fix is a motor swap or internal component replacement, we carry common replacement assemblies for the brands listed above. If the lock body itself is beyond repair, we’ll walk you through replacement options on the spot – from entry-grade Schlage to high-security Medeco, with a written price for each before you decide anything. The full repair typically takes one to two hours depending on the fault. Before we touch the lock, we give you a written price. That price is the price on the invoice. This rule has been in place since 2002 and it does not have exceptions. All work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise – if it’s not right, we come back and make it right.
